FASTPITCH GOES 6-0 THIS WEEKEND

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues fastpitch team went 6-0 on a three-day road trip this weekend, October 2-4.

Friday night saw the Blues defeat York 13-5 and 10-3. Alicia Callaghan and Annie Vlahiotis got the pitching victories. The big offence came from the bats of Nicole Knudsen (two home runs, and seven runs scored), Renee Ridout (five RBI), and Mercedes Roddau (two triples, and four RBI).

Saturday saw a long bus trip to Ottawa for a matchup with the Gee-Gees. Taisley Isaac started in the pitching circle and was perfect through four innings. The offence took over with nine runs scores before Renee Ridout closed out the game on the mound, with two scoreless innings. The final score in game one was 9-3, with Alika Kingsbury scoring three runs, while seven of nine starters reached base.  Game 2 had Renee Ridout continuing to pitch, and throw a complete game for another victory, only giving up three hits along the way. Nicole Knudsen led the way with three hits, and three runs scored, while Kylie O'Donnell also had three hits and a run driven in on route to a 5-1 victory.

The team then traveled to Carleton to play the Ravens Sunday morning. Taisley Isaac was again excellent in the circle, throwing a complete game, two hitter, giving up just one unearned run. A full team effort on offence saw the Blues score five runs, with Mercedes Roddau driving in a pair for the 5-1 win. With the Blues looking to sweep the weekend, Renee Ridout went back out to pitch Game 2, and gave the team three good innings before handing the ball off to first year pitcher, Annie Vlahiotis. Annie threw four good innings to get the win, with the offence putting up nine runs again. Credit Karen Nishi with two hits, and two runs in the middle of the lineup. Every starter reached base, helping the team to their eighth win in a row.

The fastpitch team is now 14-4 on the season, and sits in second place in the OIWFA standings, with one week to go before the playoffs.
