BLUES BLANK GRYPHONS IN SEASON OPENER

Box Score The OUA defending champion University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's volleyball team defeated the Guelph Gryphons 3-0 (25-12, 25-21, 25-20) on Friday night (Oct. 23) in Guelph.

The season-opening victory took place in the same gym that Toronto won the OUA banner last February.

Third-year middle Tessa Davis notched nine kills and four blocks, while veteran Bojana Radan had nine kills, two blocks and five digs on the night. Rookie Olivia van Baaren also added nine kills, two blocks and seven digs, while fellow freshman Alina Dormann had eight kills, two blocks, one ace and seven digs in the victory.

Sophomore outside hitter Anna Feore recorded five kills, two aces, two blocks and 13 digs, with Denise Wooding leading all players with 15 digs. Veteran setter Madelyn Mandryk notched 28 assists and seven digs in the win.

Becky Breau led the Gryphons with eight kills and 13 digs in the loss.

The Varsity Blues return to action next Friday, October 30 as they travel to Kingston, Ont., to take on the RMC Paladins. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
