BLUES SWEEP SERIES VS GUELPH AND YORK

The Varsity Blues fastpitch team was busy this weekend with games at Guelph on Friday night, and their home opener versus York on Saturday afternoon.  The Blues played very well and swept both series for four wins over the weekend.  They were unable to play games on Sunday versus Queen's due to a rain soaked field.

On Friday night at Guelph, Game 1 saw a 3-3 tie after four innings, but the Blues were able to explode for 12 unanswered runs in the fifth inning to win 15-3.  Game 2 was a bit steadier, yet the same story again as the game was tied 4-4 after three innings.  Eleni Vlahiotis came on as the relief pitcher and recorded the win. The Blues scored big again for five runs in the 4th to hold on for a 9-4 victory.

Saturday afternoon was the home opener for the fastpitch team and it was also a league wide, Pink Day in the Park to support Breast Cancer.  The team donned pink socks, and collected donations for the charity.  Despite all the excitement about the home opener and the charity event, the Blues were focused on their game and put together two very solid performances against York.  Nicole Knudsen, Kylie O'Donnell, Natasha Szlapetis, and Amelia Ballak pounded home runs in the big wins (18-3 and 20-0).

For the weekend, the team batted an extremely impressive .500 (52-104), while hitting four home runs, four triples, and played stellar defence.  Team captain, Renee Ridout was 8-for-10 on the weekend, and Alexandra Crane added six hits herself, that included four doubles and a triple.  Toronto now have a 6-2 record on the year, with four consecutive wins.  This has the team slotted in third place in the league and in a very good position moving forward.

The Blues travel to Western on Saturday, September 27 for two games, then to Windsor on Sunday, September 28 for another doubleheader.
