FOURTH QUARTER PUSH NOT ENOUGH TO TOPPLE T-BIRDS

Box Score The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's basketball team fell 74-69 to the Algoma Thunderbirds on Saturday night in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.

With the loss, the Blues drop to 4-16 and sit in eighth place in the OUA East division.

Fourth-year guard Dylan Churchill notched a season-high 24 points, going 7-for14 from beyond the arc, while adding eight rebounds in the loss. Alex Hill added 13 points and eight rebounds, while guard Matt Savel put up 12 points.

The Blues and T-birds kept the game close in the first quarter with Algoma taking a two point lead 18-16, into the second frame. Algoma pushed ahead and held Toronto to 11 points at the end of the second quarter to head into halftime up 44-27.

Toronto closed the gap to 11 points at the end of the third trailing the Thunderbirds 57-46. U of T brought the game within one (62-61) midway through the final frame; however, Toronto was unable to capitalize and Algoma took the game 74-69.

Reynaldo Carnakie led the Thunderbirds with 24 points, six rebounds and six steals and teammate Brett Zufelt notched 20 points and five rebounds.

The Varsity Blues will be back in action on Friday, February 14, when they take on the Queen's Gaels at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.
