Box Score Photo GalleryFifth-year leftside hitter Charlotte Sider recorded 17 kills in leading the No. 5 University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-21) victory over the No. 10 Ryerson Rams on Sunday, November 9 at Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport.
With the win, the Blues remain a perfect 5-0 and move into sole possession of first place in the East, while the Rams drop to 4-1 and are tied with the York Lions for second.
Sider added five digs, one block and one ace to her game-high 17 kills. Third-year standout Caleigh Cruickshank added nine kills, 13 digs, two aces and two blocks, while libero Denise Wooding led all players with 15 digs. Setter Madelyn Mandryk notched 34 assists in the victory.
The first set was a back-and-forth battle, with Ryerson holding a 16-14 lead at the technical time out. The Rams took a 19-17 lead, but Toronto responded with an 8-2 run, led by three kills from Sider and three points from Cruickshank, to take the first 25-19.
The Blues got out to a 7-3 lead but the Rams came back and evened the score at 14-14. A big kill from Bojana Radan gave the home team a 16-15 advantage at the technical timeout. Ryerson rallied were up 20-18, but Toronto came back and a final kill from Sider took the second 25-23 in favour of the home team.
Ryerson was up 9-5 early but a couple of Radan blocks evened the score at 12-12 midway through the third set. The Blues were up 16-14 at the break. U of T closed out the dominating win with a final kill from Sider, winning the third 25-21.
Ryerson was led by a 12-kill performance from Emily Nicholishen.
The Varsity Blues return to the court next Saturday, November 15 as they head to North Bay, Ont., to take on the Nipissing Lakers. Game time is set for 12 p.m.
