Box Score Third-year forward Devin Johnson recorded a double-double of 24 points and 18 rebounds in leading the University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's basketball team to a 79-76 season-opening victory over the Waterloo Warriors on Friday, November 7 in Waterloo.
Johnson went 10-for-15 from the free throw line and added two three pointers on the night. Fourth-year guard Julian Clarke had 17 points, while Manny Sahota notched 13 points, five rebounds and three steals in the win.
Tied 19-19 after the first quarter, Waterloo went ahead and held a narrow 33-30 lead at halftime. The Warriors continued to lead, taking a 54-50 advantage into the final frame, but the Blues took over with six straight points from Clarke midway through the fourth quarter.
Myles Charvis and Jon Ravenhorst led the Warriors with 17 points apiece.
The Varsity Blues return to action tomorrow night as they head back to Waterloo to take on the Laurier Golden Hawks. Tip off is set for 8 p.m.
