Box Score The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's volleyball team defeated the Windsor Lancers 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-13) on Saturday, January 25 at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.
With the win, the Varsity Blues improve to 11-3 and remain in third place, two points behind the York Lions (12-2) with five games remaining in the regular season.
Fourth-year left side hitter Charlotte Sider (Ottawa) led all players with 10 kills, while adding four digs and three blocks. Rookie Tessa Davis recorded seven kills, three aces, and four blocks, while Denise Wooding had seven kills, two blocks and one ace on the day.
Madelyn Mandryk notched 18 assists, with Kate Lonergan adding a game-high 10 digs in the win.
Both teams went back and forth to start the first set, until the Blues went on a 4-0 run and a Wooding kill gave U of T a 16-11 advantage at the technical time out. Â Toronto continued to roll and took the first 25-18.
Windsor got out to an early lead, but the Blues went on a 6-1 streak to take a 7-5 advantage early in the frame. Â U of T extended their lead with back-to-back aces from Tessa Davis heading into the technical time out (16-9).
Windsor attempted to rally with a 4-1 run, but the Blues ended the set on an 8-1 streak to take it 25-14.
The Lancers again got out to a quick 4-2 lead, but Toronto quickly evened the score at 6-6. The two teams kept even, with Windsor taking a 16-14 lead into the technical timeout. The Lancers extended their lead, only to be answered right back from the Blues. Some late work by Madelyn Mandryk and a final kill from Sider gave the Blues a 25-23 third-set win.
Jennifer Straver led the Lancers with six kills, while Danielle Lenarduzzi had 16 assists and nine digs.
The Varsity Blues return to action tomorrow as they host their annual Think Pink game versus the Western Mustangs. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
