The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's and women's track and field teams travelled to Montreal for the 19th annual McGill Team Challenge this past weekend (Jan. 24-25).
Toronto's women placed fourth overall with 63 points, behind Guelph (130), York (83) and Western (73), while the Blues men were seventh with 43.5 points. York took the men's team title with 123 points, over the second-place Guelph Gryphons (117.5).
Leading the way for Blues was Maggie Hanlon, Rachel Jewett, Natalie Geiger and Fiona Callender with a first-place finish in the women's 4x400 relay (3:45.65). Geiger also met the CIS standard with an eight-place finish in the 300m (39.47), while Callender, Honor Walmsley and Jewett finished 4, 5, 6 in the 600m. Walmsley also earned a sixth-place finish in the 1000m.
Colleen Hennessy placed third overall in the 1500m in a time of 4:32.57, while Katia Vasilyeva and Carolyn Adams were tied for fifth in the high jump competition (1.65m).
Sacha Smart led Toronto's men, meeting the CIS standard in both the 1000m and 600m races. Smart placed third in the 1000m in a time of 2:24.23, and fifth in the 600m in 1:19.72.
Greg MacNeill earned a third-place finish in the 300m in a time of 34.55 seconds. MacNeill helped Tim Arbido, Rayshuan Franklin and Isiah Weathers break a U of T record and meet CIS standard in the men's 4x200 relay in a time of 1:28.22.
Toronto's 4x400 relay team of Franklin, Weathers, MacNeill and Smart also met CIS standard in a time of 3:19.97.
