FASTPITCH FALLS TO WATERLOO, LAURIER

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues fastpitch team opened their 2013 regular season versus the Waterloo Warriors and Laurier Golden Hawks this past weekend (Sept. 14-15) at Brampton Fairgrounds.

The Blues dropped 9-1 and 10-3 decisions to Waterloo, before falling 11-0 and 6-3 to Laurier on Sunday.

In the first game versus Waterloo, Kylie O'Donnell attempted to rally the troops with a triple in the fourth inning and on the defensive obstruction by the short stop, earned Toronto's lone run of the game. Shelby Noblett got the start and Eleni Vlahiotis came in later in the game to shut down Waterloo, allowing no runs and only two runners on base.

Waterloo scored two runs in the first inning of the second game. The Blues responded in the bottom of the inning with Renee Ridout reaching first on a walk and was driven in on a RBI double by O'Donnell, who reached third on the error by the third baseman. The Warriors went onto score six runs in the second inning with Toronto unable to catch up in the 10-3 loss.

After the Blues fell 11-0 to the Hawks in Sunday's first game, Toronto held Laurier scoreless through the first three innings of the second game.

The Blues opened the scoring as Renee Ridout drove home Shannon O'Keefe, who got on base and then stole second. Laurier responded with three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings, and Toronto was unable to mount a comeback, despite signs of improvement in their defensive play.

The Varsity Blues return to action next Saturday, September 21 as they take on the York Lions at Maple Community District Park. Game times are set for 2 and 4 p.m.
