The University of Toronto Varsity Blues and the Concordia Stingers fought to a draw, 21-21, in CIS football exhibition action on Sunday, August 18 at Varsity Centre.

With Toronto leading 21-12 with under five minutes to go, Concordia rallied and evened the score with 1:32 remaining when Francois Dessureault connected with fourth-year slotback Kristopher Bastien on a 50-yard touchdown strike.

The two squads met at this time last year, with Concordia prevailing 31-24 in Montreal.

Second-year Blues quarterback Chris Jugovic of Hamilton, Ont., had a solid outing, going 10-for 17 for 159 yards and one major. Fifth-year veteran receiver Paul de Pass (Ajax, Ont.) notched a team-high 89 yards and one TD, while rookie Ashton Rochester (Oakville) led the Blues on the ground with 63 rushing yards.Â

First-year linebacker Corey Williams led all player with five tackles, while John Connors and Trevory Harvey added four. Abiodun Olusoga, Zack Lukings and Martin Colangelo each had two sacks on the day.

Leading 4-2 in the dying seconds of the first half, Toronto went ahead as Jugovic capped off a three-play, 44-yard drive with a 23-yard connection with de Pass. The Blues were up 11-2 at halftime.

First-year kicker Eric Hewitson of Crambridge, Ont., extended U of T's lead with a 17-yard field goal midway through the third. On the ensuing drive, Concordia quarterback Reid Quest (Regina) hit Bastien (St. Lambert, Que.) with a 13-yard touchdown pass. Hewitson added another field goal, this time from 40 yards out, to give Toronto an 18-9 lead heading into the final frame.

The Stingers closed the gap, thanks to Keegan Treloar's 20-yard field goal halfway through the fourth, but Hewitson responded with his third of the game, an 18-yard chip shot, to restore the two possession lead. Toronto conceded a safety with less than three minutes to go to bring the game within reach for the Stingers.

Quest went 13-for-17 for 198 yards and one TD, while Dessureault was 7-of-17 for 127 yards and one major. Bastien led all players with 174 yards on seven catches and two touchdowns, while Axel Kabal had a team-high 23 rushing yards on six carries. Second-year linebacker Brandon Arsenault-Henry led the team with four tackles.
