The Varsity Blues women’s basketball team defeated the York Lions 88-52 in OUA East quarter-final action on Wednesday night (Feb. 20) at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.
With the win, the Varsity Blues head to Ottawa for an East semifinal versus the second-place and No. 7 nationally ranked Carleton Ravens this Saturday, February 23 at 5:30 p.m. The two teams also met last season, with the Ravens coming out on top 84-62.
Toronto knocked down a season-high 88 points, shooting 47% (37-78) from the floor, while going 11-for-14 from the free throw line.
Fourth-year guard Jasmine Lewin led all players with a career-high 25 points. The Brampton, Ont., native went 10-for-14 from the floor while adding three boards and four assists on the night.
Third-year forward Julie Longauer (Whitby, Ont.) notched 15 points and four rebounds, while New Westminster, B.C., native Rachael Sider added 12 points. Jill Stratton tallied a career-high nine assists, with veteran Amanda Lauzon (Niagara Falls, Ont.) recording 10 points and nine rebounds in the final home game of her career.
Rookie guard Cyrielle Recoura (Voiron, France) led the Lions with 14 points and eight boards, while third-year forward Courtney Osbourne of Markham, Ont., added 10 points and seven boards in the loss.
A 13-point quarter from Lewin saw the Blues take a commanding 21-3 lead after the first 10 minutes of action. Toronto was dominant, shooting 63% (10-16) from the floor, compared to York’s 6% (1-18).
The Blues continued to control the play with a 20-point quarter and held a 41-13 advantage at halftime.
The Lions began to find their shooting tough in the latter half of the third quarter, led by a seven-point effort from rookie forward Shauncy Fisher (Wallaceburg, Ont.); however, U of T maintained a comfortable 34-point lead (65-31) heading into the final frame.
Toronto hit the nail on the head, outscoring York 23-21 in the fourth to secure the dominant 36-point victory.
