The Varsity Blues men’s and women’s basketball teams cap off their 2012-13 regular season with a home-and-home versus the Ryerson Rams this weekend (Feb. 15-16).
Toronto hosts Ryerson on Friday night at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym. The women start the action at 6 p.m., with the men to follow at 8 p.m. Live stats will be available for both games via varsityblues.ca.
The Blues then head to Mattamy Athletic Centre on Saturday night for their final game of the regular season.
U of T will be honouring four graduating players in a special ceremony at the conclusion of the women’s game on Friday night. Blues bsaketball will also be capping off Athlete Ally Week, an initiative, spearheaded by the Faculty of Kinesiology and Physical Education, to help build awareness about challenges and issues facing LGBTQ athletes and allies on campus. U of T’s women are 10-8 and have clinched third place in the East division. Ryerson is 6-12 and looks to overcome the Queen’s Gaels (7-13) for fifth this weekend.
Third-year forward Rachael Sider (New Westminster, B.C.) leads the Blues with 12.2 points per game, while Etobicoke, Ont., native Jill Stratton has averaged 10.1 points in nine games. Alicia Van Kampen, Jasmine Lewin and Liane Bailey have all posted over seven points per game.
Fourth-year forward Amanda Lauzon (Niagara Falls, Ont.) tops the team with 7.7 boards per contest, while Van Kampen has recorded 6.2 rebounds per game this season.
Toronto’s men are 2-16 and have been eliminated from playoff contention. Ryerson is 14-4 and currently tied with the Ottawa Gee-Gees (15-4) for second place, with one game in hand.
Veteran guards Arun Kumar (Hamilton, Ont.) and Alex Hill (Toronto) have led U of T this season, averaging 17.3 and 19.0 points per game, respectively. Fifth-year forward Ben Garvin of Holland Landing, Ont., had posted 10.4 points and 4.3 boards per contest, while Adam Plummer leads the team with 6.2 rebounds per game.
