Fifth-year guard Alex Hill recorded 33 points but the Varsity Blues men's basketball team came up short in a 108-96 loss to the Laurier Golden Hawks on Friday night (Nov. 8) at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.

With the loss, the Blues drop to 1-2, while the Hawks improve to 2-1 in the early goings of the season.

First-year head coach John Campbell took on his father and Laurier veteran coach Peter Campbell in his first home game as a Varsity Blue. Peter and the Hawks got out to an amazing start and led 36-15 after the first quarter. Toronto was unable to overcome the 21-point first-quarter deficit in the loss.

"I think it was a disappointing start to the game," said John Campbell. "I think anytime you give up 36 points in the first 10 minutes it's hard to come back and certainly from our perspective we thought we had a good game plan coming in, but we struggled to contain penetration and that allowed them to shoot the ball as well as they did."

Hill went 20-for-22 from the free throw line and added seven boards and two assists on the night. The Toronto native now ranked second in the OUA, averaging 26 points per game.

Fourth-year guard Matt Savel of Hamilton, Ont., added a career-high 19 points and went 3-for-5 from beyond the arc, while Devin Johnson had 12 points and seven boards in the loss.

Laurier standout Max Allin led the Hawks with 27 points, six rebounds and two steals. Will Coulthard added 22 points. Both players nailed four three's in the victory.

The Varsity Blues will look to bounce back tomorrow night as they host the Waterloo Warriors at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym. Game time is set for 8 p.m.
