First-year head coach John Campbell takes on his father, Peter Campbell, as the University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's basketball team hosts the Laurier Golden Hawks in their 2013-14 home opener on Friday night (Nov. 8) at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.
Â
The Blues also take on the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday night. Tip off on both nights is set for 8 p.m. Advanced tickets are on sale here and both games will be streamed live at GoBlues.tv.
Â
Fresh off his first victory as a Varsity Blue, John Campbell will look to top his father, who is in his 15th season as Hawks bench boss, in his first home game at U of T.
Â
"It's a unique experience," said Campbell. "Obviously, he played a big role in my development as a player and coach. He has also worked hard to bring a culture of excellence to Laurier, something I aspire to create here at U of T. It will be a great challenge for our team and in a competitive league it is a pivotal match-up."
Â
Toronto and Laurier are 6-6 since their first-ever meeting on Nov. 10, 2001; however, the Golden Hawks have taken the last four games against the Blues. U of T last defeated Laurier 80-67 on Nov. 21, 2008.
Â
The Varsity Blues are 1-1 to start the season. After falling 96-75 to the McMaster Marauders on Friday night, the Blues bounced back, led by a monster 35-point performance from veteran Alex Hill, to top the Brock Badgers 93-85 for their first win of the year.
Â
Hill (Toronto) currently leads the team and ranks third in the OUA with 22.5 points per game, while also ranking fourth in the province with 8.0 boards per contest. Second-year forward Devin Johnson (Ajax, Ont.) averaged 17 points and 6.5 boards in Toronto's first two games this season.
Â
Both Dakota Laurin and Manny Sahota are averaging double digits, with 10.5 and 11.0 points per game, respectively.
Â
The Hawks are also 1-1 after Week 1 of OUA basketball action. Laurier defeated the Algoma Thunderbirds 98-53, before falling 78-71 to the Laurentian Voyageurs. Fifth-year guard Max Allin (Chatham, Ont.) leads the team with 19.5 points per game.
