BLUES FALL JUST SHORT IN THUNDER BAY

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's basketball team dropped a 65-63 decision to the Lakehead Thunderwolves on Friday night (Nov. 22) in Thunder Bay, Ont.

With the loss, the Blues drop to 0-6 and remain tied for seventh in the East, while the Thunderwolves improve to 4-3 and sit in sixth in the West.

Fourth-year forward Liane Bailey of Montreal notched a game-high 17 points, while adding eight rebounds. Fellow veteran Jill Stratton (Etobicoke) added 16 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals, while Rachael Sider had 12 points and six boards in the loss.

In search of their first win of the season, Toronto got off to an amazing start and led 20-1 after the first six minutes of action. Lakehead ended the frame on a 9-0 run and U of T held a 10-point lead after the first (20-10).

The Thunderwolves continued to close the gap through the second, outscoring the Blues 21-12 as U of T held a narrow 32-31 lead at halftime.

Lakehead took the lead for good in the third quarter, and despite a valiant fourth-quarter rally from the Blues, Katie Ulakovic drained a jumper with three seconds to go in the game to seal the two-point win for the home team.

Alyse Kalkan led Lakehead with 17 points and seven rebounds, while Ulakovic had 14 points in the victory.

The Varsity Blues return to action tomorrow night as they head to Guelph, Ont., to take on the Gryphons. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
