Fifth-year guard Alex Hill knocked down 35 points in leading the University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's basketball team to a 79-70 on Friday, November 15 at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.
With the win, the Blues improve to 2-2, while the Mustangs drop to 0-5 on the season.
A Toronto native, Hill went 10-for-16 from the floor and 6-for-9 from beyond the arc, while also draining 9-of-12 free throws. Rookie guard Nicholas Burke of Hamilton, Ont., and sophomore forward Devin Johnson (Ajax, Ont.) each added nine points, while Dakota Laurin (Calgary) posted six points and a team-high eight boards in the win.
Second-year Mustangs guard Eric MacDonald gave the visiting team an early 8-4 lead, but the Blues went on a 15-4 run, led by 11 points and three three-pointers from Hill. The Mustangs rallied to cut the deficit and Toronto led 21-17 at the end of the first quarter.
Burke opened the second quarter with a three and Hill drained back-to-back from beyond the arc midway through the frame to give Toronto a 32-20 lead. U of T took a 39-24 advantage into halftime.
Western slowly inched their way back into the game and came within two (41-39) with back-to-back three's from Peter Scholtes (London) and Elliott Dooley (Ottawa) midway through the third quarter. Hill and Churchill responded with three's of their own to restore an 11-point cushion (56-45) heading into the final frame.
Johnson opened the fourth with a three and the Blues kept rolling to maintain a comfortable lead. Hill added eight more points en route to the game and career-high 35 in the nine-point win.
The Varsity Blues return to action tomorrow night as they host the No. 7 Windsor Lancers at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym. Game time is set for 8 p.m.
