BLUES DROP SEASON OPENER TO MARAUDERS

Box Score The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's basketball team fell 96-75 to the McMaster Marauders in their 2013-14 season opener on Friday, November 1 in Hamilton, Ont.

Fifth-year guard Dakota Laurin (Calgary) led the Blues with 16 points, while Devin Johnson had 15, and both Matt Savel and Dylan Churchill had 12 on the night. Veteran Alex Hill added 10 points and a team-high nine boards in the loss.

Down 20-9 midway through the first frame, the Blues rallied and went on an 11-4 run to bring the game back within reach. The Marauders held a 27-20 lead after the first quarter.

Hill brought the game within three (32-29) with a long three-pointer midway through the second; however, McMaster ended the frame on a 14-8 run to take a 46-37 lead into halftime.

An even third quarter saw the Blues still trailing by nine, and despite putting up 20 points in the fourth, it wasn't enough as Toronto dropped their first game of the season.

McMaster's Taylor Black led all players with 28 points and nine boards, while Joe Rocca added 16 points in the win.

The Blues look to bounce back tomorrow night as they travel to St. Catharines, Ont., to take on the Brock Badgers. Toronto returns home next Friday, November 8 as they host the Laurier Golden Hawks in their 2013 home opener. Game time on both nights is 8 p.m.
