The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's volleyball team defeated the Nipissing Lakers 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-17) in their 2013-14 home opener on Saturday, October 26 at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.
The match was the first between the Blues and the Lakers, and proved to be a tight contest.
The first set saw a back-and-forth battle between the teams, before Toronto took the set 25-21 with a kill from vetran Jake Dysselhof (Mississauga, Ont.).
The Lakers looked to have the momentum at the start of the second set as Toronto trailed 8-11; however, the Blues got back into a rhythm with a five-point run that put them in motion for a 25-19 second-set win.
The Blues come out firing in the third set. The Lakers kept at the Blues heels, but Toronto sealed the game and their first win of the season with a Dysselhof serving ace.
First-year right side hitter William Colucci (Toronto) led the Blues with a game-high 12 kills, while adding five digs on the day. Alex Park (Toronto) added eight kills and seven digs, while Dysselhof had seven kills, five serving aces and five digs in the win.Â
The Blues will be back in action tomorrow (Oct. 27) when they take on the York Lions at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
