The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team fell 3-0 to the visiting McGill Redmen on Saturday, October 12 at Varsity Arena.

The Blues are now 1-1-0 on the season after defeating the Ottawa Gee-Gees in their season opener last night.

Fourth-year goalie Garrett Sheehan (Cremona, Alta.) made 26 saves, and was solid despite the loss, keeping the Blues in the game right to the final buzzer.

The Blues nearly opened the scoring midway through the first when Jeff Brown (Toronto) fired a pass cross-ice to team captain Blake Boddy (Scarborough, Ont.) who deftly deflected the puck on goal, but was robbed by McGill goaltender Andrew Flemming.

The missed opportunity would come back to bite U of T later in the period, with the Redmen opening up a 1-0 lead with just four minutes remaining. Sheehan stopped the initial point shot from Neil Blunden, but the puck dropped behind him and lay on the goal line before it was swatted into the net by Max Le Sieur for his first of two goals on the night.

Sheehan was sharp in the second, making a number of glove saves, including one on David Rose in the slot, to keep Toronto within one.

U of T had numerous chances to tie the game in the third, the best coming when Tyler Turcotte (St. Catherines, Ont.) blasted a shot from the point with Brown on the doorstep, but the puck was swallowed up by Flemming without a rebound opportunity.

Then with just under four minutes remaining, McGill defenceman Ryan McKiernan fired a one-timer off a face-off win that beat Sheehan to the glove side to give the Redmen a two-goal lead.

Le Sieur would add an empty net goal to seal the 3-0 victory for McGill.

Redmen netminder Andrew Flemming made 37 saves for the shutout win. McGill is now 1-0-1 after opening their season with a 3-2 overtime loss to the Ryerson Rams last night.

The Blues next game is this Wednesday, October 16 at home against the Ryerson Rams. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m.
