Box Score The Varsity Blues women’s volleyball team won their third straight by beating the Guelph Gryphons 3-1 (25-23, 27-29, 25-23, 25-15) on Sunday, January 27 at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.
Jennifer Neilson (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) registered 13 kills for the Blues, who combined for nine services aces in the match. Guelph was led by Julie Gordon’s (Barrie, Ont.) game-high 15 kills.
The match started evenly with the first 16 points being split. The Blues built a commanding lead with two four-point runs, going up 19-11. Toronto held strong against a Guelph rally to keep the lead and take the first set 25-23.
Both teams took the lead multiple times while trading the first 22 points to begin the second set. Neither side would win more than two points in a row until Guelph went on a 7-2 run to lead 18-13. The Varsity Blues returned the favour taking five of the next six points to close the gap to 19-17. The two squads both defended against multiple set points for the opposing team before Guelph took the second set 29-27.
The third set was the first to feature one team jumping out to an early lead, as Toronto went up 7-3 and then extended that to 12-4. The Gryphons stormed back with a 6-1 run. The two teams traded mini rallies before it was all square at 21-21. Toronto pulled away for good claiming the set 25-23.
In the fourth, Toronto jumped out to another early advantage with an 8-4 run. The Blues kept the momentum, not letting the Gryphons back in by taking eight of the next 13 points. Toronto closed out the set on a 9-6 run, winning 25-15 to take the match.
The Varsity Blues (8-7) next action will be on the road when they battle the Windsor Lancers (3-11) on Friday, February 1 at 6 p.m.
