Box Score Jill Stratton notched a game-high 20 points in leading the Varsity Blues women’s basketball team to a 66-62 win over the Laurentian Lady Vees on Saturday night (Jan. 19) in Sudbury, Ont.
With the win, Toronto's first since Jan. 5, the Blues improve to 6-7 and move into a tie with the Queen’s Gaels for third place in the OUA East.
Stratton (Etobicoke, Ont.) was 8-of-14 from the floor, while adding seven rebounds and two steals. Third-year forward Julie Longauer added 11 points, while veteran Alicia Van Kampen had eight points and a team-high eight rebounds in the win.
Danielle Harris led the Lady Vees with 17 points. Emma Decloe recorded a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds in the loss.
Leading 40-38 at halftime, the Blues broke free in the third quarter to build a lead that would not diminish. Rachael Sider drained three's to open and close the frame as Toronto held a 10-point advantage heading into the fourth.
Laurentian battled back to bring the game within two with less than two minutes remaining, but a Liane Bailey lay-up in the paint sealed the win for the Blues.
The Varsity Blues return to action next Saturday, January 26 as they host the Queen's Gaels in their 6th annual Think Pink game.
