NO. 5 LIONS TRUMP BLUES IN FIVE-SET THRILLER

Box Score The Varsity Blues women’s volleyball team dropped a 3-2 (25-22, 18-25, 25-23, 18-25, 6-15) decision to the No. 5 York Lions on Saturday night (Jan. 12) at Tait McKenzie Centre.
 
Second-year left side hitter Denise Wooding (North Vancouver) recorded a season-high 14 points and a team-high 22 digs in the loss. Third-year standout Jennifer Neilson (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) had nine kills and 14 digs, while Ottawa native Charlotte Sider posted eight kills and 16 digs on the night.
 
Down 18-14 in the first set, the Blues clawed their way back to take it 25-22. After dropping the second set 18-25, U of T once again overcame an early deficit to gain a 2-1 advantage with a 25-23 third-set victory.
 
The Lions took over from there and proved why they are the only undefeated team in the CIS, taking the last two sets 25-18, 15-6.
 
Brandie Wilkerson led all players with 15 kills, while Michelle Pierce added 10 kills for the Lions in the win.
 
The Blues (5-7) will look to climb out of eighth place as they travel to take on the Brock Badgers next Friday, January 18 in St. Catharines, Ont. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
