Box Score Arun Kumar knocked down 27 points as the Varsity Blues men’s basketball team fell 92-75 to the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Saturday, January 12 at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.
Ottawa (10-1) improves their head-to-head record to 46-44 over Toronto since 1971 and are now tied with Ryerson (10-1) for second place in the OUA East division.
Kumar (Hamilton, Ont.) went 4-for-7 from beyond the arc en route to his game-high tally. Holland Landing, Ont., native Ben Garvin added 17 points, while Alex Hill had 15 in the loss.
The Gee-Gees built an early 9-4 lead but a Toronto 10-5 streak evened the game at 14-14. Ottawa held a 21-20 lead after the first quarter. The two teams traded the lead to start the second, but the Gee-Gees surged ahead and were up 43-35 at halftime.
Ottawa continued to control the game and led by 10 (66-56) heading into the fourth quarter. The Blues brought the game within six (71-65) with 6:47 remaining, but the Gee-Gees restored their cushion en route to the win.
Five Gee-Gees hit double digits on the night. Gabriel Gonthier-Dubue (Gatineau, Que.) tallied 23 points, while Johnny Berhanemeskel had 19. Warren Ward added a double-double of 14 points and a game-high 10 boards, and both Mehdi Tihani and Moe Ismail had 10 points in the win.
The Varsity Blues travel to take on the York Lions (4-7) next Friday, January 18. Tip off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
