NO. 6 RAVENS EDGE BLUES ON HOME COURT

Box Score The Varsity Blues women’s basketball team fell 48-44 to the Carleton Ravens in their first home game of 2013 on Friday, January 11 at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.
 
With the loss, the Blues drop to 5-5 and remain in third place in the OUA East division, while the Ravens improve to 8-3 and sit tied for first with the Ottawa Gee-Gees (8-3).
 
Toronto holds a commanding 71-12 head-to-head record over Carleton; however, the Ravens have won eight of the last 10 meetings and extend their streak to four with tonight's victory.
 
Third-year forward Liane Bailey (Montreal) recorded a game-high 14 points and added four rebounds and three steals on the night. Veteran Amanda Lauzon (Niagara Falls, Ont.) continued to dominate under the basket, leading all players with 13 boards. She also had nine points in the loss.
 
The Blues got off to a rough start as Carleton built an 8-1 lead in the first five minutes of action. With some help from Julie Longauer, U of T came back and held a 10-8 advantage after the first quarter.
 
Bailey helped widen the gap early in the second frame; however, the Ravens surged ahead and gained a 27-23 lead at halftime.
 
Bailey knocked down five consecutive points to open the second half and brought the game within one. The two teams exchanged baskets and Carleton headed into the final 10 minutes with a two-point margin (37-35).
 
Ravens rookie forward Lindsay Shotbolt (Markham, Ont.) took control of the game, giving the visiting squad a 10-point lead with five minutes remaining. The Blues slowly cut the gap, but it wasn’t enough as the Ravens walked away with their eighth win of the season.
 
Shotbolt also tallied a game-high 14 points and added nine rebounds, while Darcy Hawkins (Merrickville, Ont.) had 11 points in the win.
 
The Varsity Blues return to action tomorrow night as they host the Ottawa Gee-Gees (8-3) at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym. Tip off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
