Box Score Five players hit double digits as the Varsity Blues men’s basketball team closed out their 2011-12 regular season with a 92-85 win over the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Saturday night (Feb. 18) at Montpetit Hall.
The Blues finish the season in fifth place with a 10-12 record and are set to travel to Sudbury, Ont., for an OUA East quarter-final match-up with the fifth-place Laurentian Voyageurs this Wednesday, February 22.
Third-year forward Alex Hill tallied a team-high 22 points, while fifth-year guard and fellow Toronto native Justin Holmes went 5-for-8 from beyond the arc en route to an 18-point night.
Drazen Glisic notched 15 points and a game-high nine boards, while Dakota Laurin and Sean Nickel added 11 and 12 points, respectively, in the win.
The first quarter went back and forth with Toronto holding a slight 28-22 lead after the first 10 minutes of action. Ottawa came back and brought the game within three with 2:35 to go in the first half, but the Blues surged ahead to take a 50-43 lead into the locker room.
U of T went up by as many as 12 points to start the third but the Gee-Gees went on a 13-2 run to bring it within one late in the frame. Toronto opened the fourth with an 8-2 run to build a lead that would not diminish en route to their 10th win of the season.
Ottawa was led by Johnny Berhanemeskel’s game-high 23-point performance.
