KUMAR SILENCES LIONS IN CROSS-TOWN RIVALRY

Box Score Fourth-year guard Arun Kumar knocked down eight consecutive points in the third quarter to widen the gap for good as the Varsity Blues men’s basketball team defeated the York Lions 87-63 on Saturday night (Feb. 11) at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.

A native of Hamilton, Ont., Kumar ended the night with 18 points, going 4-for-8 from beyond the arc.  Toronto native Alex Hill tallied a game-high 22 points, 15 in the first quarter, going 5-of-10 from three-point land, and adding seven boards and five assists on the night.

Ben Garvin of Holland Landing, Ont., posted 12 points while Burnaby, B.C., native Andrew Wasik notched the double-double of 10 points and 10 boards in the last home game of his career.

The Blues built a narrow 18-17 lead after the first quarter and then opened the game up with a 22-12 second quarter, giving the home team an 11-point advantage at halftime (40-29).

The Lions came out on a mission to start the second half and brought the game within five in the first two minutes of the third quarter. That’s when Kumar stepped up with back-to-back three’s and a jumper to give the Blues a lead that would not diminish.

Toronto outscored York 27-18 in the third and 20-16 in the fourth to come away with the 15-point win.

David Tyndale led the Lions with 22 points, while Nick Tufegdziuch added 14 in the loss.

The Varsity Blues return to action when they head to Ottawa, Ont., to take on the No. 1 Carleton Ravens next Friday night (Feb. 17). Tip off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
