BLUES CAN’T OVERCOME EARLY DEFICIT

Box Score The Varsity Blues men’s basketball team fell 88-78 to the Brock Badgers on Saturday, December 1 at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.
 
The Blues head into the December break with a 2-6 record, in seventh place in the OUA East. The Badgers improve to 2-5 and are tied for second in the West.
 
Fifth-year guard Arun Kumar (Hamilton, Ont.) led the Blues with 24 points, while Toronto native Alex Hill added 20 points and seven boards on the night. Ben Garvin notched a season-high 18 points and Adam Plummer had 10 points and six rebounds in the loss.
 
The Badgers came out ready and raring to go, building 14-1 lead in the first three and a half minutes. The Blues found their legs, and with 10 points from Hill, cut the gap to six (25-19) after the first quarter.
 
Brock extended their lead with an early three and a Mark Gibson dunk to open the second quarter. U of T surged late, thanks to seven points from Kumar. The Badgers led 37-31 at halftime. 
 
Both teams exchanged baskets to open the third, but back-to-back three’s restored a 13-point lead for the Badgers. Brock was up 70-56 heading in to the finale frame.
 
Toronto opened the fourth on a 7-0 run to bring the game within seven; however, that’s as close as they’d come as Brock notched their second win of the season.
 
Tshing Kasamba recorded a game-high 29 points, tying a school record with eight three pointers. Jameson Tipping had 21 points, while Issack Egueh added 14 points in the win.
 
The Varsity Blues return to the court in the new year, as they travel to Kingston, Ont., on Saturday, January 5 to take on the Queen’s Gaels. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
