BLUES BLOW PAST GRYPHONS IN HOME OPENER

Box Score The Varsity Blues men’s basketball team opened their 2012-13 season with a convincing 71-55 win over the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday night (Nov. 9) at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.
 
Veteran guards Alex Hill (Toronto) and Arun Kumar (Hamilton, Ont.) led the Blues with 19 and 20 points, respectively, while both adding a team-high six rebounds on the night. Third-year forward Adam Plummer of Ajax, Ont., matched his career-best performance with 10 points, while Matt Savel added eight in the win.
 
The Blues came out ready and raring to go, building a 22-8 lead after the first frame. Toronto held the Gryphons scoreless for the first six minutes of the second quarter and held a dominant 24-point advantage (36-12) at halftime.
 
The Gryphons opened the second half on an 8-3 run, but the Blues found their stride and maintained a 46-29 lead heading into the final frame.
 
Guelph put up 26 points in the fourth quarter, but it wouldn’t be enough as the Blues walked away with the lopsided win.
 
Rookie guard Charles Amponsah led the Gryphons with 12 points, while Burlington, Ont., native Michel Clark had 10 in the loss.
 
The Varsity Blues return to the court tomorrow night as they host the Lakehead Thunderwolves at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym. Advance tickets are on sale here. The game will be streamed live via varsityblues.ca starting at 8 p.m.
