Box Score The Varsity Blues men’s volleyball team fell 3-2 (13-25, 25-22, 25-19, 24-26, 13-15) to the Ryerson Rams on Friday, November 16 at Mattamy Athletic Centre.
With the loss, the Blues drop to 2-5, while Ryerson improves to 4-3 and moves into third place in the OUA.
Fifth-year veteran Mitchell Woodside of Clyde River, P.E.I., led the Blues with 20 kills and 10 digs. Third-year left Jake Dysselhof (Mississauga, Ont.) had 14 kills and five digs, while Jay Tremonti added eight kills and three blocks.
Team captain Michael Denton of Scarborough, Ont., recorded 54 assists, five digs and three blocks in the loss.
After a shaky start and a 25-13 first-set loss, the Blues found their bearings and went onto edge the Rams to take a 2-1 lead. The fourth set saw the home team win the back-and-forth battle, 26-24, and the game headed into the fifth-and-deciding frame.
The Blues got out to an early lead, but the Rams took over and held an 8-7 advantage at the technical time out. Toronto closed the gap to one, but that’s as close as it would get as Ryerson held on for the 15-13 win.
Ryerson’s Robert Wojcik led all players with 22 kills on the night.
The Varsity Blues will look to bounce back next Friday, November 23 as they travel to Guelph, Ont., to take on the Gryphons. Game time is set for 8 p.m.
