The Varsity Blues went 3-0 to secure a post-season appearance this weekend in OUA baseball action.
The Blues swept the Waterloo Warriors with 9-5 and 5-1 wins on Friday afternoon before dominating the Queen’s Gaels 15-0 on Saturday to finish the season with a 10-11 record and clinch the last playoff spot.
The Blues got out to a quick 2-0 lead over Waterloo and went onto gain a 4-1 lead heading into the sixth inning. The Warriors rallied for four runs, but the Blues battled back with five of their own in the bottom of the sixth. Peter Nash earned the win on the mound, while Harrison Carmichael led Toronto with two RBI in the win.
The second game of the day was slow to start, with Toronto carrying a 1-0 advantage into the fifth frame. After the Warriors evened the score in the top of the inning, the Blues exploded for three runs, thanks in large part to a Carmichael double. The Charlottetown native had another two RBI in the win.
On Saturday, the Blues scored one run in each of the first four innings, before exploding for 11 combined runs in the last two frames. Carmichael again led the Blues with three RBI and four runs on two hits. Drew Taylor earned the win on the mound, striking out five and allowing only three hits in five innings of work.
The Varsity Blues return to the field next weekend as they look to defend their OUA title at the 2012 championship hosted by Brock.
