The Varsity Blues men’s lacrosse team notched their second victory of the season with an impressive 11-10 quadruple overtime victory over the McMaster Marauders on Friday, October 5 at Varsity Centre.
With the win, the Blues end their three game losing streak and improve to a 2-6 record, while the Marauders fall to 1-7. The Blues now stand alone in sixth place overall in CUFLA West division.
Tied 10-10 at the end of regulation, the two teams headed into overtime. The game’s hero proved to be Toronto native Jordan Robertson, who scored the lone overtime goal, his fourth of the game, in the fourth overtime quarter. This is the second time this season where Robertson’s heroic overtime goal has given the Blues a victory.
After quickly falling behind 1-0, Toronto quickly stormed back when Peterborough, Ont., native Mike Ayotte scored three goalsto give U of T a 3-1 lead after the first frame.
Toronto would do much of the same in the second, with Robertson scoring 3-of-4 goals in the quarter. The Blues led 7-2 at halftime.
The Marauders were relentless and quickly bounced back in the third quarter, scoring four goals to make the score 7-6 with only two minutes left to play. The Blues perked up with two quick goals putting the score at 9-6 by the end of the third.
Both teams came out fighting to open the fourth quarter, but it was the Marauders who would strike next, scoring the next four goals to take a 10-9 lead with two minutes to play in the fourth. However, the Blues were not ready to take a loss. With regulation coming to an end Robertson found Ryan Paris (Toronto) for a the game-tying goal at the end of regulation.
The Varsity Blues return to action this Saturday, October 6 where they take on the Laurier Golden Hawks at Budd Park. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
