Box Score The Varsity Blues men’s basketball team dropped their fifth straight game in a 79-65 loss to the York Lions on Saturday, January 21 at Tait McKenzie Centre.
The Blues got out to an early 5-3 lead, only to be answered by York leading scorer David Tyndale. Tyndale drained two free throws 2:55 into the first quarter to give the Lions a lead that would remain throughout the first half. The Lions led by as many as 11 but the Blues brought the game within eight (38-30) at halftime.
Toronto looked fired up to start the second half and rallied to narrow the gap to one (39-38) early in the third. The Lions responded but the Blues went basket-for-basket with their cross town rivals, tying the game three times in the last four minutes. York held onto a 51-50 lead heading into the final frame.
Both teams exchanged the lead over the first four minutes of the fourth quarter. The Lions began to break away, as York ended the game on a 19-6 run to secure the win.
Fifth-year forward Sean Nickel of Kitchener, Ont., led the Blues with 14 points, while Andrew Wasik and Arun Kumar added 13 each and Alex Hill registered 11 in the loss.
Tyndale led all players with 23 points, while Richard Iheadindu added 17 in the win.
The loss leaves the Blues in fifth place in the OUA East division with a 5-10 record.
The Varsity Blues will look to get back into the win column next Friday, January 27 as they host the Queen’s Gaels at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym. Tip off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
