BLUES EDGED BY LIONS IN FIVE-SET THRILLER

The Varsity Blues men’s volleyball team narrowly fell 3-2 (25-22, 23-25, 25-11, 18-25, 12-15) to the York Lions on Friday, January 20 at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.

Fourth-year right side hitter Mitchell Woodside (Clyde River, P.E.I.) led all players with 16 kills, while sophomore standout Jake Dysselhof had 15 kills and five digs on the night.  Scarborough, Ont., native Matthew Vares added 10 kills and 12 digs and rookie setter Steven Khuu tallied a game-high 42 assists in the loss.

The Blues got out to a good start and held a steady eight-point lead in the first set. Toronto held off a late York rally to take the set 25-22.  The second set proved to be the opposite, with the Lions getting out to an early lead, only to be answered by a late U of T surge.

U of T replied with a dominant third set, taking the game 25-11; however, York went onto control the game from there, coming back from the one-set deficit to earn the two points.

York was led by Karim Khalil’s 14-kill, 14-dig performance.  Ray Szeto added 11 kills and 11 digs in the win.

The Varsity Blues return to the court next Saturday, January 28 as they host the RMC Paladins at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
