WASIK, DE GIORGIO LEAD BLUES TO VICTORY

Box Score Andrew Wasik and Anthony De Giorgio combined for 49 points to lead the Varsity Blues to an 87-82 win over the Queen’s Gaels in OUA men’s basketball action on Friday, February 4 in Kingston, Ont.

With the win, the Blues improve to 13-5 and are one win away from the first-round playoff bye in the OUA East division. The Gaels drop to 3-15 and sit in seventh place.

Wasik led all players with 26 points, scoring 10 and nine of those in the first and second quarters, respectively. The Burnaby, B.C., native was 11-of-16 from the floor and added eight rebounds on the night.

A native of Toronto, De Giorgio came out of halftime with a hot hand, tallying 14 points in the third, en route to a career-high 23-point performance in the win. The fifth-year guard was 8-of-11 from the floor, including three three-pointers and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line.

Veteran forward Drazen Glisic added 10 points in the win.

The Gaels held a narrow 18-17 lead after the first quarter, but the Blues battled back to take a 41-37 lead into halftime. De Giorgio tallied 10 points in the first four minutes of the third and turned it into a game of catch-up from there on for the Gaels.

Dan Bannister of Newmarket, Ont., led Queen’s with 22 points, while Ryan Golden (Barrie, Ont.) had 18 and Nikola Misljencevic added 14 in the loss.

The Varsity Blues return to the court tomorrow afternoon when they look to secure a first-round playoff bye versus the RMC Paladins. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
