U of T’s women sit comfortably in third place with 222 points, behind the host Calgary Dinos (545) and UBC Thunderbirds (402.5). The Blues men are in a tight race with Laval for third place, sitting only 10 points ahead of the RSEQ champions.

Third-year standout Zack Chetrat earned his second gold medal in the meet with a dominant performance in the 200-metre butterfly (1:57.45). Teammate and fellow Oakville, Ont., native Curtis Samuel earned the bronze in a time of 2:00.53.

After an impressive silver-medal finish on Thursday, St. Catharines, Ont., native Mike Smerek picked up his first national title in the 50-metre butterfly. The third-year physical education and health student touched the wall in 24.05.

Frank Despond placed third in the men’s 400 freestyle (3:52.81) behind Olympian Ryan Cochrane and Calgary’s David Dimitrov.

"This was a huge step for Frank as this is one of the first times he has gone head-to-head with the big boys,” said Varsity Blues head coach Byron MacDonald. “It’s where he belongs and it was a big breakthrough and a sign of great things to come,"

Toronto’s 4x200 freestyle relay team of Chetrat, Samuel, Bond and Despond also earned the bronze medal with a time of 7:21.30.

Leading the way in women’s action was second-year standout Paige Schultz. The Toronto native edged Guelph’s Chantique Payne in the 50-metre butterfly to claim her first gold medal of the meet.

Also turning heads was rookie Vanessa Treasure with a silver-medal finish in the 200-metre butterfly in a time of 2:14.72. Treasure was only outtouched by Olympian Stephanie Horner of Victoria.

Rounding out the women’s medalists was OUA female swimmer of the year Andrea Jurenovskis, who claimed the bronze medal in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:00.88.

The three-day CIS championships wrap up Saturday with prelims starting at 10 a.m. Mountain Time and finals at 6 p.m. MT.
