MCGUIRE, BOYLE NAMED POWERADE VARSITY BLUES ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Joshua McGuire and Sarah Boyle have been named the Powerade Varsity Blues athletes of the week for the week ending February 20.

Two-time Olympian Joshua McGuire won the Charles Walter Trophy as the individual foil champion to lead the Varsity Blues to a third-place finish at the 2011 OUA men's fencing championship, February 19-20.

A native of Hamilton, Ont., McGuire topped teammate Kyle Chan 15-7 in the semi-final round before handily defeating Carleton’s Scott McNeil 15-6 to claim the title.

The seven-time Canadian national foil champion also led U of T to a dominant first-place finish in the foil team event. The Blues closest competitors were the Carleton Ravens, who they beat 45-27. On average, McGuire’s opponents only scored two points to each of his five touches.

Three-time national champion Sarah Boyle cleared a CIS-leading 1.78m in the women’s high jump at Toronto’s Hal Brown Memorial Meet on Friday, February 18.

A native of Scarborough, Ont., Boyle was the last jumper to enter the competition, easily clearing 1.68 and 1.73 metres. The fifth-year physical education and health student then cleared 1.78 metres on her third and final attempt to claim the top spot in the CIS heading into this weekend’s OUA championships.
