The Varsity Blues men’s volleyball team fell 3-0 (25-12, 25-17, 25-22) to the Western Mustangs in their final game of the 2010-11 season on Sunday, February 13 at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.
In his final game as a Varsity Blue, Ottawa native Adam Palmer was named the player of the match, with six kills on the day. Jonothan Adomait ended with seven kills, followed up by Jake Dysselhof, Matthew Vares and Jay Tremonti, who landed four kills each.
The first set was rough Western’s Matt Waite (St. Thomas, Ont.) riddled them with shots, gaining the lead in favour of the Mustangs. Palmer and Dysselhof got a few kills in on the Mustangs, but they weren’t making it very easy. By the second technical, the Blues were down 8-16 and despite Adomait gaining some last minute ground, the Mustangs handily took the first set.
Waite again led the Mustangs into the lead in the second, backed up by player of the match Jack Creaghan (Toronto). The Blues struggled to break through the Mustangs defences, down eight points again at the second technical. Palmer and Dave Merrit (Windsor, Ont.) landed some nice shots; however Western was too far ahead, winning the match 25-17.
The final set was a different story as Palmer and Tremonti notched kill after kill, never falling more than two points behind the Mustangs. Hamza Chaudry (London, Ont.) and Luke Sim (Scarborough, Ont.) kept Western going despite the Blues attacks, but it was really anyone’s game. In a tense few minutes of play, the Mustangs only just managed to grab a close 25-22 victory.
Waite, Creaghan, and Sim all tallied six kills each in the Mustangs win.
