WARD, GEE-GEES GET PAST BLUES

Box Score Third-year guard Warren Ward tallied 41 points as the Ottawa Gee-Gees defeated the Varsity Blues 94-71 in OUA men’s basketball action on Saturday night (Feb. 12) at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.

With the loss, the Blues are now 14-7 and remain in second place, while the Gee-Gees improve to 11-10 in third in the OUA East division.

Ward went 16-for-18 from the floor, including a perfect 5-for-5 from beyond the arc, while adding 10 rebounds and three assists on the night. The London, Ont., native recorded 13 of Ottawa’s 23 first-quarter points as the visiting team got out to an early seven-point lead.

The Gee-Gees did not stop there, outscoring the Blues 26-15 in the second to built a commanding 49-31 lead at halftime.

The Blues rallied in the third quarter, led by a 13-point performance from fourth-year guard and Toronto native Justin Holmes, and only trailed by eight (62-54) heading into the fourth.

Ward put the game away with four three-pointers and a huge dunk for 16 points in the fourth quarter. Blues forward Sean Nickel came off the bench to tally eight points, but it wasn’t enough as the final buzzer sounded in favour of the Gee-Gees.

Holmes was named the Varsity Blue player of the game for his 16-point performance on the night. Second-year forward Alex Hill added 14 points, while both Drazen Glisic and Arun Kumar had nine in the loss.

The Varsity Blues return to the court next Friday, February 18 when they host the Ryerson Rams in the Downtown Showdown at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym. Tip off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
