STRONG SECOND HALF PUSHES NO. 1 RAVENS PAST BLUES

Box Score The Varsity Blues fell prey to the undefeated Carleton Ravens, 102-75, in OUA men’s basketball action on Friday night (Feb. 11) at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.

With the loss, the Blues are now 14-6 and remain in second place, while the Ravens improve to a perfect 20-0 on the season.

Down 40-36 at halftime, Carleton drained 12 three-pointers in the second half to outscore the Blues 66-35 and put the game away.

The first quarter was a back-and-forth affair, as Toronto built an eight-point lead halfway through, only to be countered by four Phillip Scrubb (Richmond, B.C.) three-pointers. Toronto’s Justin Holmes made two late threes of his own and the Ravens held a narrow 26-24 lead heading into the second.

The Blues were slow to start the second quarter, unable to register a point in the first five minutes; however, the home team rallied, led by six points each from Holmes and forward Alex Hill, to go on a 16-6 run and take a 40-36 lead into halftime.

The Ravens evened the score in the first three minutes of the third and widened the gap for good, thanks to another five from beyond the arc. Carleton held a 65-52 lead heading into the fourth.

The Ravens didn’t stop there, as Elliott Thompson of Fredericton recorded 14 of Carleton’s 37 fourth-quarter points. Despite a valiant effort by the Blues, the final buzzer sounded in a 27-point win for the Ravens.

Hill led Toronto, going 5-for-7 from three-point land and recorded a team-high 17 points. Holmes also drained four threes for 16 points, while Burnaby, B.C., native Andrew Wasik had 14 points and Drazen Glisic (Sarajevo, BIH) had 11 in the loss.

Thompson led all playerd with 27 points, going 7-of-10 from beyond the arc and a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Scrubb had an equally as impressive night with 24 points, while Tyson Hinz had 14 and Willy Manigat had 10 in the win.

The Varsity Blues return to the floor tomorrow night as they host the Ottawa Gee-Gees at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym. Tip off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
