BLUES EDGE MUSTANGS

Box Score Andrew Wasik recorded 20 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Varsity Blues men’s basketball team to an 83-79 victory over the Western Mustangs on Friday, November 25 at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.

With the win, the Blues improve to 2-3, while the Mustangs drop to 1-4 on the season.

Wasik was 10-of-17 from the floor and added two steals on the night.  Both Alex Hill and Sean Nickel notched 14 points, while Arun Kumar had nine and Drazen Glisic added eight points, seven boards and four blocks in the win.

Wasik led the Blues through the first quarter with eight points. U of T ended the frame on a 7-0 run to gain a 21-11 lead heading into the second.

The Mustangs came back to bring the game within four early in the second quarter; however, the Blues inched ahead and held an eight-point lead (38-30) at halftime.

Western came out ready to go in the third quarter and quickly closed the gap with a 16-6 run that would see them take their first lead since early in the game.  The play went back-and-forth but a couple of jumpers from Kumar and a last-minute three from Ben Garvin would give the Blues a 58-55 lead heading into the final frame.

Nickel led the charge in what would be a high-scoring fourth quarter with nine points, including two three-pointers.  A late rally by the Mustangs, including a three by Peter Scholtes and six points in the last minute by Ryan Barbeau, brought the game within one (80-79) with just 14 seconds left.

Barbeau led all players with 30 points, while Scholtes added 28 in the loss.

The Varsity Blues return to action tomorrow night as they host the No. 10 Windsor Lancers at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym. Tip off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
