Box Score The Varsity Blues men’s basketball team dropped an 89-71 decision to the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday night (Nov. 19) at W.F. Mitchell Centre.
With the loss, the Blues drop to 1-3 to start the season.
Fifth-year forward Drazen Glisic of Sarajevo, BIH, led the Blues with 16 points and six boards, while Arun Kumar had 13 points in the loss.
The Blues opened the first quarter with a 7-3 run; however, the Gryphons battled back and held a 21-13 lead heading into the second. Both teams exchanged baskets throughout leading up to halftime with Kumar leading the charge for Toronto. The Mississauga, Ont., native had 11 first-half points. Guelph took a 34-25 lead into halftime.
The Gryphons didn’t let up in the third quarter as the home team built a 15-point lead (50-35) midway through the frame. Guelph continued to widen the gap and with 37 third-quarter points, held a dominant 71-44 lead heading into the fourth.
Despite a 27-point performance in the fourth quarter, the Blues could not come back and dropped their third straight game.
Guelph was led by Dan McCarthy’s double-double of 22 points and 11 boards. Zachary Angus tallied 20 points, while Kareem Malcolm had 18 in the win.
The Varsity Blues return to action next Friday, November 25 as they host the Western Mustangs at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym. Game time is set for 8 p.m.
