Box Score The Varsity Blues men’s basketball team dropped an 84-79 decision to the Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday, November 12 at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.
With the loss, the Blues are 1-1, while Laurier improves to 2-0 after the 2011-12 OUA men’s basketball opening weekend.
Fifth-year forward Drazen Glisic of Sarajevo, BIH was named the Varsity Blues player of the game after leading the team with 18 points and 11 boards, while five other Blues hit double digits on the night.
Third-year forward Alex Hill (Toronto) had 15 points, while both Andrew Wasik (Burnaby, B.C.) and Arun Kumar had 13 points. Justin Holmes and Sean Nickel each tallied 10 points in the losing cause.
The play went back-and-forth through the first quarter with neither team holding more than a four-point lead. The game remained deadlocked at 20-20 after the first and 35-35 at halftime.
The Blues got things going midway through the third quarter with Holmes and Glisic combining for 10 points to build a quick seven-point lead (50-43) lead. Laurier attempted to rally but were answered by back-to-back threes from Arun Kumar and Alex Hill.
A late three by Laurier’s William Coulthard would narrow the gap as Toronto led 56-54 heading into the fourth quarter.
Kale Harrison opened the frame with a jumper to even the score and four Kyle Enright three-pointers would ultimately secure the Laurier win. Hill would hit two late threes to bring the game within two with 27 seconds to go, but it was too little, too late as the Hawks came away with the win.
Maxwell Allin led all players with 26 points and added nine boards in the win. Matthew Buckley had 14 points and Enright and Patrick Donnelly had 12 points each in the win.
The Varsity Blues return to the court next Friday, November 18 as they travel to Thunder Bay, Ont., to take on the Lakehead Thunderwolves. Tip off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
