Box Score The Varsity Blues men’s basketball team came away with a 71-58 victory over the York Lions on Friday night (Jan. 28) at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.
With the win, the Blues improve to 11-5 and remain in second place, while York drops to 7-9 in third place in the OUA East division.
Fourth-year guard and Toronto native Justin Holmes led Toronto for the second consecutive game with 19 points, including four three pointers, six boards and two steals.
Sarajevo, BIH native Drazen Glisic had 16 points and six rebounds, while Alex Hill of Toronto chipped in with 13 points on the night. Veteran forward Andrew Wasik (Burnaby, B.C.) tallied eight points and eight boards in the win.
The first half went back-and-forth with neither team gaining more than a five-point advantage. In the dying seconds of the second quarter, York’s Dejan Kravic came up with a huge steal and streaked down the court for a nice two-handed dunk to even the score; however, Holmes came right back with a three-pointer to give U of T a 31-28 at halftime.
Things remained close throughout the third quarter until Hill extended Toronto’s lead, draining two from beyond the arc and adding a jumper in the last two minutes of the frame. The Blues maintained a steady lead from there to secure their fourth win in the past five games.
Kravic (London, Ont.) led all players with 21 points and 15 boards, while David Tyndale of Mississauga, Ont., had 19 points. Kenneth Buchanan added 10 rebounds in the losing cause.
