BLUES TAME LIONS IN THRILLING FIVE-SET WIN

The Varsity Blues men’s volleyball team came away with a 3-2 (19-25, 29-27, 26-24, 21-25, 15-12) victory over the York Lions on Sunday afternoon at Tait McKenzie Centre.

The win marks Toronto’s third of the season and moves them to within two points of the York Lions (4-10).

York took the first set 25-19, the widest margin of victory over the entire match. Toronto battled back to take a 2-1 lead; however, the home team came up with a 25-21 fourth-set win to force the fifth-and-deciding set.

Blues rookie Jake Dysselhof of Mississauga, Ont., led the Blues with 13 kills and seven digs, while veteran and Ottawa native Adam Palmer had 12 kills, five blocks and a serving ace on the day.

Both Mitchell Woodside and Matthew Vares contributed 11 kills on the day, while first-year setter Alex Park of Toronto totalled 44 assists and 12 digs in the win.

York was led by Nikola Sandic’s game-high 20 kills and 14 digs. Karim Khalil recorded 16 kills, while Gregory Ivan and Tom Podstawka had 12 and 13 kills, respectively.

The Varsity Blues return to action next Friday, January 21 when they travel to Waterloo, Ont., to take on the Warriors. Opening serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
