WOMEN’S BASKETBALL DOWNS LADY VEES

Box Score Sherri Pierce tallied 21 points to lead the No. 9 Varsity Blues women’s basketball team to a dominant 94-63 victory over the Laurentian Lady Vees on Saturday night at Ben Avery Gym.

With the win, the Blues improve to 9-4 and remain in second place in the competitive OUA East, while the Lady Vees drop to 3-10, tied for sixth.

Pierce was 11-for-12 from the free throw line and added six boards to her team-high 21 points. Veteran forward Nicki Schutz of Toronto recorded 15 points and seven boards, while Julie Longauer and Kingston, Ont., native Erin McNeely had 10 and 11 points, respectively in the win.

The Blues outscored the home team 32-19 in the first quarter to build a lead that would not dwindle. Toronto went on to take a 20-point lead at halftime, before outscoring the Lady Vees 40-29 in the second half to round out the win.

Laurentian was led by Lisa Furchner’s game-high 26 points and 10 boards, with Katie Goggins chipping in with a double-double (20 points, 12 rebounds) of her own. The duo accounted for two-thirds of the Lady Vees points on the night.

The Lady Vees struggled on the night, shooting 34.6% from the floor and committing 28 turnovers, compared to Toronto’s 11.

The Varsity Blues return to the court next Friday, January 21 when they host the RMC Paladins in their fourth annual Cheer Blue, Think Pink game at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym. Tip off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
