Outfielder Steven Hersch combined for four hits, five runs and two RBI as the Varsity Blues baseball team handily defeated the Queen’s Gaels 10-3 and 11-3 on Sunday, September 26 at Megaffin Park in Kingston, Ont.
With the wins, U of T improves to 9-3 and is currently tied for first with the Western Mustangs.
The Blues got out to a 5-0 lead over the first two innings and never looked back. The Gaels finally got on the board in the fourth; however, Toronto responded with two of their own in the fifth inning. Both teams exchanged one run in both the sixth and seventh, before U of T capped off the game with a single score in the ninth.
Hersch (Toronto) led the Blues with two hits, two RBI, three runs and a stolen base. Catcher Jeremy Hopkins also had two hits and one RBI in the win. Ryan Donnelly earned the win on the mound.
The second game of the day started much like the first, as the Blues built at 5-0 lead in the first inning. Toronto added two runs in each of the third, fourth and sixth innings to take their fourth game of the weekend.
Toronto native Jamie Lekas had three hits, three runs and one RBI, while Hersch recorded two hits and two runs in the win. Peter Nash (Ajax, Ont.) allowed three hits in five innings of work for the win.
The Varsity Blues return to the field next Saturday, October 2 when they host the McMaster Marauders at Scarborough Campus. Game times are scheduled for 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
