BLUES SPLIT WITH OTTAWA, DOWN CARLETON

The Varsity Blues fastpitch team went 3-1 in their 2010 home openers this weekend (Sept. 25-26) at River Grove Park in Mississauga, Ont.

Toronto dropped their first game on Saturday, 9-0, before rebounding with 9-4 victory to go 1-1 versus Ottawa. The Blues went on to dominate against the Carleton Ravens with 15-0 and 10-2 wins on Sunday.

By going 3-1 on the weekend, U of T moves into second place in the OIWFA standings with a 9-5 record.

After both teams met with famed softball player Jennie Finch at Home Run Sports on Saturday, the Blues continued to have trouble in their first game of a double header. Ottawa led off the game with a triple to cash in two runs and never looked back. Kelli Shoebridge (Gilford, Ont.) took her first loss of the season and moved to 4-1 on the year.

It was a different story in the second game of the day as the Blues regrouped and immediately took a two-run lead off a double from Oakville, Ont., native Krstin Sprukulis.

After trading runs the next couple innings, the Blues broke the game open in the sixth with three runs to take a commanding 9-4 lead. Shoebridge, in her first save appearance of the season, pitched two scoreless innings to close out the game. Sprukulis got the start and pitched five solid innings for the win and improved to 2-2 on the season.

The Blues then hosted Carleton University on Sunday. In the first inning they took out their frustrations on the unsuspecting Ravens, batting through the lineup and scoring eight times. The team continued to play hard and to score 15 runs in the opening four innings and mercied the Ravens 15-0. The game was highlighted by Shannon Burke (Toronto) who went 4-for-4 with three triples and a double. Kelowna, B.C., native Emily Lacey recorded the win and moved her record to 2-2 on the season.

After such a great first game, Lacey got the start in the second, throwing three strong innings before Sprukulis came in to close. The U of T offence continued to shine as the team scored 10 runs and mercied Carleton once again, 10-2. Lacey picked up her second win of the day an improved to 3-2 on the season.

The Blues continue their home stand next weekend as they play host to Queen's Gaels and York Lions at the Brampton Fairgrounds.
