FASTPITCH WINS BATTLE WITH WARRIORS

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues continued their winning ways on Sunday, September 12 with two wins over the Waterloo Warriors at Kinsmen Park.

The Blues won 3-2 and 8-1 to remain undefeated (4-0) after only one weekend of action in the Ontario Intercollegiate Women’s Fastpitch Association (OIWFA).

Toronto continued their strong play by jumping out to an early 2-0 lead in the second inning off a two-run single by Kelly Murphy. The Blues pushed a third run through in the fourth, as Winnie Law scored from third base on a passed ball.

Waterloo made it interesting by scoring runs in the fifth and seventh but it was not enough as pitcher Kristin Sprukulis came in to close out the game and pick up her third save in as many games. Kelli Shoebridge earned the win on the mound, improving her record to 2-0 on the season.

The back end of the double header did not start as well for the Blues. Back-to-back errors allowed Waterloo to score an unearned run and put U of T behind for the first time this season; however, U of T showed their grit and determination and got the run right back in the home half of the inning off an RBI single by Shannon Burke.

Toronto went on to claim the lead in the third as Burke recorded her second RBI of the game after hitting a sac fly to score Murphy from third base.

U of T broke it open in the fifth inning after Emily Lacey walked and then scored from first on Winnie Law's double, who then moved to third on an error on the play. With Law on third, Shoebridge stepped up and laid down a beautiful suicide squeeze to bring in Law and ended up on third off a two-base throwing error. Next up was Murphy, who picked up her fourth RBI of the day with a single to left, making the score 5-1.

Shoebridge held the Waterloo batters to just the one earned run through four innings of work and Sprukulis came in to close out the game. In the home half of the sixth, U of T put the game away with a sacrifice fly by Karen Nishi and a two-run single by Lauren Shute. Shoebridge improved her record to 3-0 and is also a perfect 4-for-4 in the save department.

Offensively the team was also led by Shoebridge, who had six hits over the two games, giving her 11 on the season and improved her batting average to an astounding .733. Murphy had four RBI's in the double header, while Sprukulis added four hits.

The Varsity Blues have a tough schedule ahead with six road games scheduled for next weekend. The team travels to Princeton, Ont., on Friday night to play the Guelph Gryphons, before heading to London to play the undefeated Western Mustangs on Saturday. U of T ends the road trip in Windsor on Sunday.
