BLUES SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER WITH LAURIER

The Varsity Blues baseball team went 1-1 as they opened the season versus the 2009 OUA silver medalist Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday, September 11 at Bachtel Park in Waterloo, Ont.

U of T dominated the first game to come away with a 10-2 victory before Laurier turned the tides to take the second game 8-3.

Veteran Ryan Donnelly (Toronto) pitched eight scoreless innings to lead the Blues in their first game over Laurier. Rookie Steve Hopkins had a strong day at the plate with three hits and one RBI. A struggling Golden Hawks defence had a total of five errors on the game contributing to the loss.

The Blues got out to a 1-0 lead in the second game of the day before Laurier’s bats came alive. The Golden Hawks brought in six runs in the second inning to take a lead that would not let up. Stephen Zagrodny (Mississauga, Ont.) pitched a complete game to earn the win, giving up two earned runs and seven hits in the seven inning game.
