The Varsity Blues men’s volleyball team fell 3-0 (25-19, 25-12, 25-14) in their 2010-11 home opener versus the Queen’s Gaels on Friday, October 22 at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.
Michael Amoroso of Toronto got the Gaels out to a small lead, but Mississauga, Ont., native Jake Dysselhof, middleman Jay Tremonti of Dryden, Ont and Jonathan Adomait (Dundas, Ont), each returned the favour, tying up the game eight times up to 12-12. It wasn’t until the second technical time out that the Gaels Brian Fautley of Oakville, Ont., widened the gap with three consecutive points and a final kill from Joen Zeeman (Cambridge, Ont.) would secure the 25-19 win.
Adomait and veteran Adam Palmer (Ottawa) got the Blues off to a good start in the second set; however, Queen’s held on strong and gained a six point lead. Zeeman, Anthony Pitfield of Ottawa and setter Jackson Dakin of Courtenay, B.C. led the Gaels to a 21-11 lead at the second technical and didn’t stop, winning the set 12-25.
The third and final began with some nice kills from Tremonti for the Blues and Phillipe Goyer (Ottawa) for the Gaels. Queen’s gained the lead, this time with help from Will Sidgewick. Trailing 16-7 after the second technical timeout, the Blues began to rally and made up some ground with excellent shots from Adomait, Nicholas McCaughan (Winnipeg), Tremonti, and Dysselhof. Queen’s would hold on to the lead and take the final set 25-14.
Dysselhof led the Blues with seven kills and a game-high 19 digs. First-year libero Michael Denton of Scarborough had 11 digs in the loss.
The Blues return to action on Sunday, October 24 when they host RMC at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym. The game time is set at 4 p.m.
